The Königstuhl: Nature and Culture

The mountain has long been a popular place for hiking and sightseeing. The mountain railway, whose lower section opened in 1890, has reached the summit since 1907, making it easier for visitors to get to the top. The Königstuhl offers a panoramic view of the city, the Neckar valley and the entire area surrounding Heidelberg.

In addition to scientific use and free time activities, the Königstuhl also has a rich cultural history. On its northern slope stands Heidelberg Castle, first mentioned in the 13th century and for centuries the residence of the Electors Palatine. The castle was destroyed in the Nine Years’ War in 1689 and 1693, which is why large parts of it are ruins today. It was only partly rebuilt and, after a lightning strike in 1764, finally abandoned. Natural wonder: Königstuhl

As already mentioned, the Königstuhl rises directly above the old town of Heidelberg and offers a panoramic view of the city, the Neckar River and the surrounding area. From the top, you can overlook the entire city of Heidelberg, including the old town and the famous Heidelberg Castle. But the view also extends beyond the city, revealing the picturesque landscape of the Neckar Valley and the Odenwald Forest.

History and Culture

The Königstuhl is home to several notable landmarks that have played an important role in the city’s history. One of the most famous landmarks on the slope of the Königstuhl is Heidelberg Castle, whose oldest parts date back to the 13th century and whose magnificent Renaissance buildings were added in the 16th and early 17th centuries. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The castle is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps and is a popular tourist destination.

How to get there?

Many ways lead to the goal, but which is the best way to climb the Königstuhl? That depends entirely on your plan. Therefore, all possible ways to get there are described in detail below.

With the cable car

The best way to reach the Königstuhl is to take the Heidelberg Bergbahn from the city center. The bottom station (Kornmarkt) is located at the foot of the mountain and it takes about 15 minutes to get to the top station Königstuhl. On the way up, the lower railway stops at the castle (Schloss) station, where you can also get off, and ends at the Molkenkur, where you change to the upper railway. The mountain railways run regularly, but are still sometimes very crowded, because especially in summer many people want to ride and every guest is taken. The ride on the mountain railroad takes 10-20 minutes, depending on the station. From the lowest station (Kornmarkt) to the upper station (Königstuhl) the ride takes between 15 and 20 minutes. Old mountain railroad enters the station

By Car

The journey to the Königstuhl is also easy to make by car. From the city center (Bismarckplatz) the route takes about 15 minutes and leads through the beautiful Heidelberg forests. There is no parking garage at the peak, but there are some other possibilities to park. Usually there are enough parking spaces.

By Bus

You can also take the bus from the city center to the Königstuhl to enjoy the unique view over Heidelberg. The rnv bus line 39 will take you from Bismarckplatz up to the Königstuhl. The ride doesn’t have the same view as the cable cars, but it only takes about 25-30 minutes.

By foot

Visitors can also climb the mountain on foot, with the help of the Himmelsleiter. With over 1200 steps, the Himmelsleiter is a gigantic staircase that leads from the castle area up to the summit region of the Königstuhl, climbing about 270 meters. The irregular staircase consists of rough and uneven stones. If the steps from the Kornmarkt in the Old Town are counted as well, the staircase comes to about 1600 steps.
